- You just can't find a better book on SQL Server. This was book could've been written in 1979 but it wouldn't matter; even when SQL Server 2010 (or whatever) comes out, it will still be relevant. A classic!
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Bible
- Paul Nielsen is a SQL guru - there's no question. This book is a huge tome of great SQL info and comes highly recommended for newbies and intermediate-level DBAs and developers

nslookup is a great command-line tool to diagnose DNS issues
Most SQL Server adminstrators prefer to change the port of a default instance from 1433 to something unused. This prevents hackers and malicious software from connecting to port 1433 and locating a SQL Server. Bottom line: everyone knows that the default SQL Server port is 1433 so, to create a secure server, change the port number
